Instructions - Index - Next Week - Previous Week - Bridge Base

One of the lesser known traditions of Holland's Cap Gemini World Top Pairs Tournament takes place after the event is over. The event always ends on a Sunday. On the Monday evening each year, several of the players congregate at Het Hok Bridge Club in Amsterdam. The level of play at Het Hok is very high; dozens of strong teams show up, cut for opponents, and play 32 board IMP matches. Kees Tammens, the proprietor of Het Hok, and the players go out of their way to make newcomers feel welcome in their club.

Fred Gitelman, President of Bridge Base Inc, was fortunate to have the chance to play with Jeff Meckstroth at Het Hok after this year's Cap Gemini. Jeff is widely regarded as one of the very best players in the world. His record, with partner Eric Rodwell, over the last 20 years has been spectacular. This week's deal is the first deal that Jeff and Fred played together. As in many real life deals, the bidding, play, and defense may not be perfect. However, it was an interesting deal.

In order to view the Deal of the Week you need a Java compatible browser (such as Netscape Navigator 2.02 or higher or Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0). You also need 32-bit internet access, which generally means Windows 95 if you are using a PC.

It seems that several people have not read the instructions for this software and have become confused. If you do not want to read the instructions, here are two useful hints:

  1. Use the Next button, not the Play button to go forward.
  2. Look for thebutton in the lower right corner of the text area. When you see this symbol it means there is more text to read before you click the Next button. Click thebutton to display the next page of text.
