Instructions - Index - Next Week - Previous Week - Bridge Base

June 29 1997 will go down in bridge history as the date that a computer program first competed in an American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) tournament. The computer program was Matt Ginsberg's GIB, which we expect to define a new standard of computer bridge play. The tournament was a Sectional in Eugene Oregon, Matt's city of residence. 2 copies of GIB played as partners in a Swiss Teams event. Matt operated one computer and Fred Gitelman, President of Bridge Base Inc., operated the other computer. Bridge Base Inc. created the user interface used by GIB for this event.

This week's deal is the prettiest hand that GIB played in the Eugene Sectional. Unfortunately, it was also one of the worst bidding disasters that GIB had. The best lesson of this week's deal is: When you do not like your contract it is still important to maintain your composure and put your full effort into the play. GIB has no composure, of course, but it is a lesson that most human players have not learned.

If you appreciate free online bridge services like the Deal of the Week and Online Vugraph, you can support our efforts by purchasing our software.

In order to view the Deal of the Week you need a Java compatible browser (such as Netscape Navigator 2.02 or higher or Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0). You also need 32-bit internet access, which generally means Windows 95 if you are using a PC.

It seems that several people have not read the instructions for this software and have become confused. If you do not want to read the instructions, here are two useful hints:

  1. Use the Next button, not the Play button to go forward.
  2. Look for thebutton in the lower right corner of the text area. When you see this symbol it means there is more text to read before you click the Next button. Click thebutton to display the next page of text.
