Instructions for The Deal of the Week

In order to view the Deal of the week you need a Java compatible browser (such as Netscape Navigator 2.02 or better or Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0). You also need 32-bit internet access, which generally means Windows 95 if you are using a PC.

When you go to look at a Deal of the Week it will take a few minutes for your browser to load our software. Please be patient! We think you will find the wait to be worth it. Once the software is loaded you will see a display like this:

What you see above is only a picture. Nothing will happen when you click your mouse on it. The basic idea of the Deal of the Week is that you are presented with a bridge hand (your hand is South's in the above picture) and you are taken through the bidding and play of this hand. You will be presented with interactive quizzes as well as analysis of the interesting bids and plays that are made. The button bar at the bottom of the picture is used to navigate around the Deal of the Week.

  • The Rewind button will take you back to the beginning of the deal of the week.
  • The Previous button will undo the last call made or card played.
  • The Next button will show the next call made in the auction or the next card played.
  • The Play button will enable play mode. In play mode the bidding and play of the hand will continue to advance automatically until either the Stop button is clicked or the end of the deal is reached. When the Play button is enabled, the button bar alters so that the Play button becomes the Stop button.
  • The scrollbar to the right of the Play button is used to set the speed at which bids are made and cards are played when play mode is enabled. The further to the right the scrollbar is set, the faster things go.

A message always appears at the right of the button bar indicating which players is to call or play. During an interactive bidding quiz, this message will say something like: Enter call for South. A group of buttons will appear immediately above this message. These buttons will enable you to select the call you want to make. The buttons will look like this:

If the call you enter is incorrect you will be asked to try again. If you enter the correct call, the bidding will advance. If you cannot figure out the correct call, you can click the Next button to see the answer.

During an interactive play quiz, the message will say something like: Select card for South. A yellow cursor will appear around one of the cards in the hand diagram. You can move this cursor using either your mouse or your keyboard. To select a card either click on the cursor or press the enter key. If the card you select is incorrect you will be asked to try again. If you enter the correct card, the play will be advance. If you cannot figure out the correct card to play, you can click the Next button to see the answer.

IMPORTANT! The area to the right of the hand diagram and below the auction diagram contains analysis about the deal. Sometimes you will see a button in the bottom right hand corner of the analysis. This indicates that there are additional pages of text for you to read before you click the Next button. By clicking the button the next page of text will be shown. When there is no button, use the Next button to move on.

A button will appear in the top right corner of the analysis when the second or subsequent pages are showing. Clicking this button will show you the previous page of analysis.

We hope you enjoy the Deal of the Week. Please send us e-mail if you have any trouble with these instructions or in using the Deal of the Week.
